The biggest triathlon in Greece was better than ever…!
Spetsathlon 2016 offered us unique moments of sportsmanship. The biggest triathlon event in Greece broke its own records regarding the number of participants and publicity buzz. The 4th year of the event was held in Spetses between May 13-15, 2016 attracting more than 1,000 triathletes for the Sprint and Endurance courses as well as the Swim race and the Bike Tour of the island. Over 3,000 people visited Spetses during the event, while the number of participants and visitors from abroad was doubled in comparison to Spetsathlon 2015. The aforementioned records make Spetsathlon one of the most important and popular sports events in the country.
Spetsathlon 2016 was co-organized by Communication Lab, organizer of the Spetses mini Marathon and Gold Tourism award winner in the category “Strategy & Innovation” for the Lengthening of the Tourist Season of Spetses, and the Hellenic Triathlon Federation, whose expertise in international events along with three internationally certified judges guaranteed the flawless organization of the races.
World class athletes were invited to Spetses, amongst them, cycling champion Ioannis Tamouridis just a few months before Rio Olympics, James Chronis, the no1 in the world ranking, Greek Triathlete, triathlon champions Deniz Dimaki, Grigoris Skoularikis and Grigoris Souvatzoglou, as well as cycling champion Marios Kokolakis and swimming coach Christos Bofilios.
The Paralympics athlete Makis Kalaras along with his fellow “Perpato” ambassador Alexandros Taxildaris, the Para-triathlete Nikos Papangelis, quadriplegic Greek cycling & swimming champion Antonis Pappas and the young Marios Anastopoulos raced as the most strong example of human will, reminding everyone that #2winis2participate!
People of Spetses also participated in Spetsathlon in the most active way, with more than 250 volunteers and a special offers program in stores, café-bars, restaurants and hotels by the Trade Association of the island. After all Spetsathlon is held under the auspices of the Municipality of Spetses as well as the Greek National Tourism Organization, GNTO.
Under Armour was the Gold Sponsor of Spetsathlon 2016, which was proudly launched to the Greek audience through the biggest triathlon in Greece.
Before the main races, on Friday, May 13th, the organizers introduced the 1st Twilight Charity Run, supporting the Holmes Place #charity4U initiative. Ada Stamatatou, George Kyriazidis, Ellie Flenga, Evgenia Tzanini and the President of Spetsathlon Organizing Committee, Marina Coutarelli lead a 3km charity run was co-organized by Holmes Place, the Wellness partner of Spetsathlon and all funds raised from the participations were donated to the 4 institutions, that were chosen by this year’s #charity4U ambassadors (ELIZA, Make-a-Wish, Theotokos, ELEPAP).
On Saturday, May 14th, the 1000m Swimming Race started with greetings from Giannis Drymonakos right from the European championship in London! Grigoris Souvatzoglou (Men with wetsuit), Deniz Dimaki (Women with wetsuit), Nikos Simantiras (Men without wetsuit) and Varvara Kouneli (Women without wetsuit) were the race winners. The 3rd 25K Spetses Bike Race around the island was held on the same day. Ioannis Tamouridis finished first as a non-competitive guest participant confirming he is in perfect shape for the Olympics challenge. Sotiris Stavropoulos and Nadia Sintzanaki won in the men’s and women’s competition respectively. George Yerolimpos, the President of the Hellenic Triathlon Federation also took part in the race! BIOTHERM, Spetsathlon Beauty partner, protected all athletes and spectators from the Greek sun during the races.
The prize giving ceremony for the Swim and the Bike race was followed by the Athletes’ Briefing in Bouboulina’s Museum, where Spetsathlon 2016 Timing Sponsor, Garmin Greece, presented the top running and light-weighted triathlon watch, Forerunner 735XT in a world’s first unveiling!
The day ended with the Pasta Party, by Melissa, where all triathletes enjoyed a free, delicious and full of carbohydrates dinner before Sunday’s race.
May 15 was the day of the Sprint and Endurance Triathlon events in both single and relay categories. James Denis Chronis was the first to complete a 750m swimming, 25km cycling and 5km running course in 01:08:12. Carly Killam won the women’s Sprint competition in 01:23:51. Holmes Place team (women), Nuventi team (men) and CB team (mixed) finished first in Sprint relay triathlon.
Grigoris Souvatzoglou broke the Endurance course record finishing in 02:18:01 while Nadia Sintzanaki was the first woman to cross the finish line of the Endurance triathlon race in 02:45:22. Endurance relay teams of Holmes Place and Fantasic3 won in men’s and mixed category respectively.

Triathlon Awards ceremony was held on Poseidonion square, in front of Poseidonion Grand Hotel, the Institutional Body of the event. During the final day ceremony, Marina Coutarelli, President of the Organizing Committee, said: “There is nothing more pleasing than exceeding your expectations. This is what Spetsathlon 2016 achieved. Spetses Triathlon is now one of the top sports events in Greece. In these three days we experienced a genuine sportsmanship feast and a tribute to the value of participating in great causes. Congratulations to everyone that contributed to this year’s big success!
